Zakat Nisab in Saudi Arabia: How Much in Riyals for 1448 AH

The Zakat nisab in Saudi riyals at a dated gold price, why figures differ (85 or 92 grams), ZATCA and personal Zakat, gold jewellery and crypto.

Fight for Palestine editorial team · Editorial team4 min read

On 8 October 2026, gold was worth about SAR 503 per gram, so the Zakat nisab in Saudi Arabia was roughly SAR 42,750 on the common 85-gram measure, or about SAR 46,275 on the 92-gram measure given by Sheikh Abdulaziz ibn Baz. If your Zakat-eligible wealth stays above the nisab for a full lunar year, Zakat is 2.5% of it.

Those riyal figures change with the gold price every day. This guide shows how they are worked out so you can redo the sum on the day your Zakat year ends, and answers the questions people in the Kingdom ask most: which gram figure to use, whether ZATCA collects personal Zakat, gold jewellery, and crypto. We do not issue rulings; for your own case, ask a scholar you trust.

How the nisab in riyals is calculated

The nisab for gold is twenty mithqal, the weight from the hadith of the Prophet, peace be upon him, that nothing is due on gold until it reaches twenty dinars. To turn that into riyals you need two numbers: the weight in grams and today's price of a gram of pure, 24-carat gold.

Gold is priced worldwide in US dollars. Kitco's spot price on the evening of 8 October 2026 was USD 134.13 per gram. The Saudi riyal is pegged to the dollar at 3.75, so that is about SAR 503 per gram. Multiply by the weight you use:

  • 85 grams × SAR 503 ≈ SAR 42,750.
  • 87.48 grams × SAR 503 ≈ SAR 44,000. This is the figure quoted by many international charities and used on our Zakat page.
  • 92 grams × SAR 503 ≈ SAR 46,275. This is Sheikh Ibn Baz's measure.

Why are there different figures: 85, 87.48 or 92 grams?

Scholars agree that the nisab is twenty mithqal. They differ on how much a mithqal weighs in modern grams, which is why calculators give different answers. Eighty-five grams is widely used by contemporary bodies and calculators. Sheikh Ibn Baz wrote that, having worked it out with people of expertise, the nisab is close to 92 grams, and that 85 grams is a little below it, adding that someone who pays Zakat on 85 grams as a precaution has done well.

In practice the gap is about SAR 3,500 at today's price. It only matters if your wealth falls between the two figures. If it does, ask a scholar which measure to follow; paying is the cautious choice.

Silver has its own nisab, which is far lower in riyals because silver is much cheaper than gold. Many scholars advise using the silver nisab for cash savings because it means more Zakat reaches people in need, while others use gold. Our guide to what Zakat is explains both thresholds.

Does ZATCA collect Zakat from individuals?

Searches for Zakat in Saudi Arabia often lead to ZATCA, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, and its portal for businesses. ZATCA collects Zakat from companies and from people carrying on commercial, investment or professional activity. Its predecessor, GAZT, said publicly in 2017 and again in 2019 that it does not impose Zakat on individuals' personal accounts, and that Zakat on personal balances is left to their owners.

So if you are an employee, a Saudi or a resident from abroad, Zakat on your savings, gold, shares and other personal wealth is yours to calculate and pay. ZATCA's calculators and filing rules are for businesses, and they do not replace your own Zakat.

Zakat on gold jewellery in Saudi Arabia

This is one of the most searched Zakat questions in the Kingdom, because two positions are well known there. The Hanbali school, widely followed in Saudi Arabia, holds that there is no Zakat on permissible jewellery kept for wearing, and the Maliki and Shafi'i schools largely agree. Sheikh Ibn Baz held the opposite: that gold and silver jewellery is subject to Zakat once it reaches the nisab, even if it is worn, and called this the correct view.

Both are followed by people you will know. Follow the scholar you trust. If you do pay on jewellery, count only the pure gold in it. A 100-gram piece of 21-carat gold contains 87.5 grams of pure gold (21 ÷ 24), so at SAR 503 a gram it is worth about SAR 44,000 and its Zakat would be about SAR 1,100. Stones and settings are not counted. Our guide to Zakat on gold has more on purity and weighing.

Zakat on crypto, shares and other savings

Cash, bank balances, gold and silver kept as savings, trade goods and shares are the usual Zakat-eligible wealth. Your home, your car and personal belongings are not. Add up what you own on your Zakat date, take away debts that are due now, and compare the total with the nisab.

Crypto is a question many people ask, and contemporary scholars have discussed how to classify and value it. Those who treat it as Zakat-eligible wealth usually value it at its market price in riyals on the day Zakat is due and add it to the rest of your savings. Ask a scholar how to treat what you hold. Saudi Arabia also has its own rules on crypto-assets, so check what applies to you.

A worked example in riyals

Say that on your Zakat date you have SAR 48,000 in the bank, SAR 12,000 in shares and gold coins worth SAR 6,000, and you owe SAR 6,000 on a bill due this month. Your Zakat-eligible total is SAR 60,000 (48,000 + 12,000 + 6,000 − 6,000).

That is above both the 85-gram and 92-gram nisab, so Zakat is due: SAR 60,000 × 2.5% = SAR 1,500. Our Zakat calculator does the same sum in any currency.

Giving your Zakat to Gaza from Saudi Arabia

The general rule is to distribute Zakat where your wealth is. Sheikh Ibn Baz held that moving it for a sound reason, such as severe poverty elsewhere, is permitted, while nearby poor people come first when all else is equal. We look at how the eight categories apply to Gaza in Can you give Zakat to Palestine?.

Inside the Kingdom, the Ehsan platform offers Zakat calculation and payment, and KSrelief collects donations for Gaza through its Sahem platform; our guide to Saudi charities for Gaza explains both. If you give your Zakat through us, it is sent in crypto from our Zakat donation page, recorded as Zakat, and not used for running costs. If you have not sent USDT before, see how to send USDT on TRC-20. Our Saudi Arabia page and our Arabic page, زكاة المال لغزة من السعودية, answer the common questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Zakat nisab in Saudi riyals?

At the gold price of 8 October 2026, about SAR 503 per gram, the nisab was roughly SAR 42,750 on the 85-gram measure and about SAR 46,275 on the 92-gram measure of Sheikh Ibn Baz. Recalculate with the gold price on your own Zakat date.

How do I calculate the nisab in SAR myself?

Take the price of one gram of 24-carat gold in US dollars, multiply it by 3.75 to get riyals, then multiply by 85 or 92 grams depending on the measure you follow.

No. ZATCA collects Zakat from businesses and people carrying on commercial activity. Its predecessor, GAZT, said Zakat on personal accounts and balances is left to their owners to pay.
