Zakat in Jordan: Nisab in Dinars, Gold Jewellery and Zakat al-Fitr

How Zakat is worked out in Jordan: the 85-gram gold nisab in dinars with a dated example, the Shafi'i view on jewellery, Zakat al-Fitr for 2026, and Gaza.

In Jordan, Zakat on wealth is 2.5% of your qualifying savings once they reach the nisab and you have held them for a lunar year. Jordan's General Iftaa Department sets the nisab at the value of 85 grams of gold, priced at the 24-carat rate. On 9 October 2026 its online calculator showed a 24-carat price of JD 92.70 a gram, which puts the nisab at about JD 7,880.

This guide explains where that figure comes from, how to work out your own Zakat in dinars, what the Iftaa Department says about gold jewellery and about sending Zakat to Gaza, and the Zakat al-Fitr amount it set for 2026. It summarises published positions; it is not a fatwa, and for anything specific to you, ask the Iftaa Department or a scholar you trust.

Which school of thought does Jordan follow for Zakat?

The General Iftaa Department says it chose the school of Imam al-Shafi'i as the basis for fatwas in Jordan, as the school most widespread in the country. It also says it may take another school's view in new questions or where the Shafi'i view would cause hardship.

That matters most for one question, Zakat on jewellery, where the schools differ. On the nisab, the rate and the lunar year, all four schools broadly agree.

What is the nisab in Jordan in dinars?

The Iftaa Department's fatwa on the gold nisab works out twenty classical dinars at 4.25 grams each, which gives 85 grams, and says this is the figure most contemporary scholars use and the one its fatwas follow. You will see other weights elsewhere, such as 87.48 grams on our own Zakat page; the difference comes from the weight given to the classical dinar.

To turn grams into dinars you need the day's gold price. The Iftaa calculator uses the buying price for 24-carat gold, meaning what a jeweller pays you for gold, as published daily by the jewellers' syndicate. Two dated examples:

  • Iftaa Department calculator, checked 9 October 2026: 24-carat at JD 92.70 a gram, so 85 x 92.70 = JD 7,879.50.
  • Petra news agency, 8 October 2026: 24-carat selling at JD 96.40 a gram, so 85 x 96.40 = JD 8,194. The selling price is higher, so a nisab based on it is higher too.

How to calculate your Zakat in dinars

Pick one day each lunar year as your Zakat date and repeat the same steps on it. The Iftaa Department's online calculator and the calculator on our Zakat page both follow this logic.

  • Add up what you own in dinars: cash, bank balances, gold and silver kept as savings, shares and goods held for trade.
  • Subtract debts that are due now.
  • Compare the total with the nisab, the value of 85 grams of 24-carat gold on that day.
  • If you are at or above the nisab and have been for a lunar year, multiply the whole total by 2.5%. For example, JD 10,000 x 2.5% = JD 250.

Is there Zakat on gold jewellery in Jordan?

The Iftaa Department's fatwa 525 says that permitted jewellery a woman keeps for wearing carries no Zakat, even if it weighs more than the nisab. It gives this as the stronger view in the Shafi'i school and notes that it is also the relied-upon view of the Maliki and Hanbali schools. If the jewellery is kept as savings rather than for wearing, Zakat is due on it.

A shorter fatwa, number 1206, adds a condition: each piece should be within what is customary among people. The Hanafi school takes a different view and holds that Zakat is due on all gold jewellery. Gold bars, coins and lira kept as savings carry Zakat in every school. Our guide to Zakat on gold explains how to convert karats into pure gold.

Can Zakat be sent from Jordan to Gaza?

On 19 October 2023 the Iftaa Department published fatwa 3818, which says Zakat may be moved to a country other than the one where it became due, especially when there is a general and urgent need, as in Gaza, and that charities may be appointed to distribute it. The fatwa recommended sending it through the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization.

Several Jordanian organisations collect Zakat for Gaza in dinars; our guide to Jordanian charities helping Gaza lists what they say on their own websites. If you choose to give your Zakat through us, it goes in crypto: start from our Zakat page or tell us it is Zakat with your transaction ID. Zakat is kept for Zakat-eligible relief for families in Gaza and running costs are never paid from it. If you send crypto from Jordan, check the rules that apply to you first.

Zakat al-Fitr in Jordan for 2026

For Ramadan 1447 (2026), the Iftaa Council's decision 331 of 23 February 2026 set Zakat al-Fitr at one sa' of wheat, 2.5 kilograms, per person, or its value in cash at a minimum of 180 qirsh (JD 1.80). It may be paid from the start of Ramadan, and the best time is between sunset on the last day of Ramadan and the Eid prayer. The same decision set fidya, for someone unable to fast, at a minimum of JD 1 a day.

Zakat al-Fitr is small and time-bound, and many people give it where they live. If you want to give it for Gaza, ask a scholar first and send it early enough to arrive before Eid. Our guide to Zakat al-Fitr covers who pays it and why.

Jordan's Zakat Fund and other channels

Jordan also has a state Zakat Fund (صندوق الزكاة), part of the work of the Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Places, which operates under a law that regulates how Zakat is collected and distributed. In June 2026 the minister described its support for families in need in Jordan: monthly payments, home repairs, rehabilitation projects and orphan sponsorship.

Paying Zakat in Jordan, to people in Jordan, through the Zakat Fund or a licensed local charity is a choice many families make. Giving to Gaza is another. If you are unsure which suits your situation, ask a scholar; what matters is that Zakat reaches people who are eligible to receive it.
