Gaza food aid: where hunger stands and how to help

Most families in Gaza still rely on food aid to eat. In July 2026 the UN-backed IPC food-security monitor reported that 1.4 million people, 67% of Gaza's population, faced crisis-level hunger or worse.

You can't post food parcels to Gaza yourself: everything that enters goes through controlled crossings. The practical way to donate food is to give money to an organisation that buys food and distributes it inside Gaza, as parcels, hot meals, bread or cash.

Where hunger in Gaza stands now

Hunger in Gaza has eased from its worst point but remains severe. Famine was confirmed in Gaza Governorate in August 2025; by December 2025 the IPC no longer classified any area as in famine, and UN agencies warned the gains could be reversed without sustained support.

The IPC analysis reported in July 2026 found 1.4 million people in Phase 3 (crisis) or worse, down from 1.6 million (77%) at the end of 2025. Around 212,000 people were still in Phase 4 (emergency), many of them near the Israeli-controlled "yellow line", where humanitarian access is hardest.

Markets have partly reopened, but prices remain far above pre-war levels. OCHA's cash partners reported that prices in September 2026 were still on average 204% above pre-October 2023 levels (OCHA, 2 October 2026), which puts food out of reach for families with no income.

How food aid reaches families

Food aid in Gaza takes a few forms, and most organisations use more than one:

  • Food parcels: monthly boxes of staples such as flour, rice, lentils, oil and tinned food. In September 2026, partners reached 220,000 households (more than 840,000 people), but each family received one parcel and one 25 kg flour bag, covering about half of minimum calorie needs (OCHA, 2 October 2026).
  • Community kitchens: hot meals cooked locally and served at distribution points. As of 24 September 2026, 25 partners were preparing 695,000 meals a day through 103 kitchens (OCHA, 2 October 2026). Food Security Sector partners warned that underfunding would significantly reduce both cooked meals and monthly food parcels from October 2026.
  • Bread and flour: bakeries supplied with flour and fuel, or flour distributed directly to families.
  • Cash and e-wallets: where markets function, digital cash lets families buy what they need locally. Aid agencies have used mobile-money and e-wallet transfers in Gaza since 2024.

Can you donate food to Gaza directly?

Not as an individual. Food enters Gaza by truck through crossings where cargo is inspected, and since May 2026 Kerem Shalom has been the only operational crossing for cargo. Individuals can't ship parcels through that system, and appeals that ask you to send goods should explain exactly how they will get them in.

Giving money is usually more useful anyway. It lets an organisation buy in bulk, buy locally when markets have stock (which also supports local traders), and switch between parcels, meals and cash as conditions change. Our guide to how aid reaches Gaza explains the route in more detail.

What to look for in a food appeal

Before you give to any food appeal, including ours, it is fair to ask:

  • What exactly does a donation buy: a parcel, a number of meals, cash? What does each cost?
  • Is the food bought inside Gaza or brought in through the crossings?
  • Who distributes it, and how are families chosen?
  • Will you report what was delivered, where and when?

Food support through Fight for Palestine

Fight for Palestine raises money for food support for displaced families in Gaza: food parcels and cooked meals delivered through local partner teams. Our food assistance appeal and feed a family appeal describe what donations fund.

We don't yet publish distribution reports for this work. When we do, they will be on our transparency page, which also sets out what we currently publish.

Questions people ask

Can you donate food to Gaza?
Not by sending food yourself; goods enter only through controlled crossings. You can donate money to an organisation that buys and distributes food in Gaza, which is usually faster and more flexible than shipping goods.
Is there still famine in Gaza?
In December 2025 the IPC no longer classified any area of Gaza as in famine. Hunger remains severe: in July 2026 it reported 1.4 million people in crisis-level hunger or worse, including about 212,000 in emergency conditions.
How much does it cost to feed a family in Gaza?
It depends on the form of help and on market prices, which have been very volatile. We look at the numbers in how much it costs to feed a family in Gaza. Any appeal you give to should tell you what its own parcels or meals cost.
Does food aid actually reach people in Gaza?
Yes, but not enough of it. UN partners reach hundreds of thousands of households each month, yet in September 2026 parcels covered only about half of a family's minimum calorie needs because of stock shortages. See how aid reaches Gaza.
