Rebuilding Clean Water Access, One Community at a Time
From emergency water trucking to rehabilitated wells and storage tanks, here is how our teams are restoring safe, clean water access across Gaza.
Water is the first thing an engineer thinks about and the last thing a healthy society has to. When systems work, water is invisible — it simply arrives. When they fail, water becomes the organizing fact of every family’s day: where to find it, how to carry it, whether it is safe, and what to give up in order to afford it.
For the families we serve in Gaza, water has been the organizing fact of the day for a long time. Fight for Palestine’s water and sanitation program works along the whole chain — emergency delivery today, restored infrastructure tomorrow — because families need both, and neither can wait for the other.
Emergency trucking: the bridge that must not fail
Our water trucking operation is the immediate answer while longer-term repairs are underway. Tankers fill at tested sources, and our drivers run fixed daily routes to distribution points fitted with tap stands, so that collection is orderly and no one’s place in line depends on the strength of their arms.
This month our trucks delivered roughly 1.9 million liters of safe drinking water across 22 distribution points — enough to provide a basic daily drinking and cooking supply to around 21,000 people. Every batch is chlorinated to standard and spot-tested by our technicians. The day we stop testing is the day trucking stops being aid and starts being risk.
Routes are reviewed weekly against a simple map our coordinators maintain: where families actually are this week, not where they were last month. Displacement moves, and water must move with it. When a site empties, its trucking slot is reassigned within days — because a tanker delivering to yesterday’s population map is a tanker wasted, and in this work waste is measured in thirst.
Rehabilitating wells and local sources
Trucking is a bridge, not a destination. The lasting work is rehabilitation: repairing damaged wells, replacing burned-out pumps, restoring power connections or adding solar arrays, and re-sealing storage tanks so that communities can once again draw water from their own ground.
This quarter our engineering team completed the rehabilitation of three community wells, each now serving between two and four thousand people. The third required replacing a pump, forty meters of riser pipe, and the entire wellhead enclosure. On the day it flowed again, the children of the neighborhood treated the tap like a carnival attraction. Our engineers let them. Some inaugurations do not need speeches.
Every rehabilitation ends the same way: with training. We hand each restored source to a local water committee — residents who learn basic maintenance, chlorination checks, and fair scheduling of pumping hours — along with a starter kit of spare parts. A well that depends on our return visit is a well half-finished. A well the neighborhood can keep alive itself is infrastructure.
For a year, I measured every jerrycan against my daughters’ thirst. Now I turn a tap in my own street. You cannot know what that means until you have lost it.
Storage and the last hundred meters
A working source is only half the system; families also need somewhere safe to keep water at home. Open containers invite contamination, and small containers force daily collection trips that consume hours of women’s and children’s time.
Our teams distributed 3,200 household water kits this quarter — sealed storage containers, collection jerrycans, and purification tablets with clear pictorial instructions. We also installed twelve elevated communal tanks at displacement sites, fitted with multiple tap points to cut queue times. Small infrastructure, large dignity.
The time savings are the least visible benefit and possibly the largest. Before the communal tanks went in at one southern site, families told us water collection consumed up to three hours a day, most of it borne by women and older children. With storage close by and queues shortened, those hours flow back into everything else a day holds — work, rest, and children who can go to a learning space instead of a water line.

Hygiene: where water becomes health
Clean water only delivers its full benefit alongside sanitation and hygiene. Our hygiene promoters — most of them women recruited from the communities they serve — run practical sessions on safe water handling, handwashing, and infant hygiene, reaching several thousand households this quarter.
We pair every session with soap and hygiene kit distribution, because knowledge without materials is a lecture, not a program. The measure of success is quiet: fewer stomach illnesses among children at the sites we serve consistently. Our medical colleagues confirm the trend, and no statistic in our program makes us prouder.
The promoters themselves are one of the program’s quiet achievements. Twenty-six women now hold trained, stipended roles in their own communities — respected, knowledgeable, and increasingly consulted on matters far beyond handwashing. Several have told us the role gave them back a public self that displacement had taken away. Water programs, it turns out, do not only carry water.
The road ahead
Next quarter’s plan is ambitious but concrete: two further well rehabilitations already surveyed, a solar pumping pilot to cut fuel dependence, and expanded trucking to three sites currently underserved. Each project is costed, scheduled, and waiting only on funding.
Water work is unglamorous — pipes, pumps, chlorine residuals, spreadsheets. But every liter in this report reached a kettle, a wudu basin, a child’s cup.
